| Infrared dynamic polarizability of HD+ rovibrational states - J. C. J. Koelemeij A calculation of dynamic polarizabilities of rovibrational states with vibrational quantum number $v=0-7$ and rotational quantum number $J=0,1$ in the 1s$\sigma_g$ ground-state potential of HD$^+$ is presented. Polarizability contributions by transitions involving other 1s$\sigma_g$ rovibrational states are explicitly calculated, whereas contributions by electronic transitions are treated quasi-statically and partially derived from existing data [R.E... | Prospects for measurement and control of the scattering length of metastable helium using photoassociation techniques - J. C. J. Koelemeij A numerical investigation of two-laser photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy on spin-polarized metastable helium (He*) atoms is presented within the context of experimental observation of the least-bound energy level in the scattering potential and subsequent determination of the s-wave scattering length. Starting out from the model developed by Bohn and Julienne [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{60}, (1999) 414], PA rate coefficients are obtained as a function of the parameters of the two lasers... | |

| Brightness of a phase-conjugating mirror behind a random medium - J. C. J. Paasschens A random-matrix theory is presented for the reflection of light by a disordered medium backed by a phase-conjugating mirror. Two regimes are distinguished, depending on the relative magnitude of the inverse dwell time of a photon in the disordered medium and the frequency shift acquired at the mirror. The qualitatively different dependence of the reflectance on the degree of disorder in the two regimes suggests a distinctive experimental test for cancellation of phase shifts in a random medium. | Magneto-optical trap for metastable helium at 389 nm - J. C. J. Koelemeij We have constructed a magneto-optical trap (MOT) for metastable triplet helium atoms utilizing the 2 3S1 -> 3 3P2 line at 389 nm as the trapping and cooling transition. The far-red-detuned MOT (detuning Delta = -41 MHz) typically contains few times 10^7 atoms at a relatively high (~10^9 cm^-3) density, which is a consequence of the large momentum transfer per photon at 389 nm and a small two-body loss rate coefficient (2 * 10^-10 cm^3/s 2 3P2 line at 1083 nm... | Probability of Reflection by a Random Laser - C. W. J. Beenakker A theory is presented (and supported by numerical simulations) for phase-coherent reflection of light by a disordered medium which either absorbs or amplifies radiation. The distribution of reflection eigenvalues is shown to be the Laguerre ensemble of random-matrix theory. The statistical fluctuations of the albedo (the ratio of reflected and incident power) are computed for arbitrary ratio of sample thickness, mean free path, and absorption or amplification length... | Localization of Light: Dual Symmetry between Absorption and Amplification - J. C. J. Paasschens We study the propagation of radiation through a disordered waveguide with a complex dielectric constant $\epsilon$, and show that dual systems, which differ only in the sign of the imaginary part of $\epsilon$, have the same localization length. Paradoxically, absorption and stimulated emission of radiation suppress the transmittance of the waveguide in the same way. Downloads: 3 | |

| Localization in a Disordered Multi-Mode Waveguide with Absorption or Amplification - T. Sh. Misirpashaev An analytical and numerical study is presented of transmission of radiation through a multi-mode waveguide containing a random medium with a complex dielectric constant $\epsilon= \epsilon'+i\epsilon''$. Depending on the sign of $\epsilon''$, the medium is absorbing or amplifying. The transmitted intensity decays exponentially $\propto\exp(-L/\xi)$ as the waveguide length $L\to\infty$, regardless of the sign of $\epsilon''$... Downloads: 2 | |

| Accuracy of the diffusion equation with extrapolated-boundary condition for transmittance of light through a turbid medium - J. C. J. Paasschens The linear intensity profile of multiply scattered light in a slab geometry extrapolates to zero at a certain distance beyond the boundary. The diffusion equation with this "extrapolated boundary condition" has been used in the literature to obtain analytical formulas for the transmittance of light through the slab as a function of angle of incidence and refractive index. The accuracy of these formulas is determined by comparison with a numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation for radiative ... Downloads: 19 | |

| Berry phase and adiabaticity of a spin diffusing in a non-uniform magnetic field - S. A. van Langen An electron spin moving adiabatically in a strong, spatially non-uniform magnetic field accumulates a geometric phase or Berry phase, which might be observable as a conductance oscillation in a mesoscopic ring. Two contradicting theories exist for how strong the magnetic field should be to ensure adiabaticity if the motion is diffusive. To resolve this controversy, we study the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field on the spin polarization and on the weak-localization effect... Downloads: 4 | |

| Reflection of light from a disordered medium backed by a phase-conjugating mirror - J. C. J. Paasschens This is a theoretical study of the interplay of optical phase-conjugation and multiple scattering. We calculate the intensity of light reflected by a phase-conjugating mirror when it is placed behind a disordered medium. We compare the results of a fully phase-coherent theory with those from the theory of radiative transfer. Both methods are equivalent if the dwell time \tau_{dwell} of a photon in the disordered medium is much larger than the inverse of the frequency shift 2\Delta\omega acquired... Downloads: 3 | |

| Blackbody radiation shift of the 27Al+ 1S0 - 3P0 transition - T. Rosenband The differential polarizability, due to near-infrared light at 1126 nm, of the 27Al+ 1S0 -> 3P0 clock transition is measured to be 4\pi\epsilon_0 x (1.6 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-31} m^3. This measurement is combined with experimental oscillator strengths to extrapolate the differential static polarizability of the clock transition as 4\pi\epsilon_0 x (1.5 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-31} m^3. The resulting room temperature blackbody fractional frequency shift of -8(3) x 10^{-18} is the lowest known shift of all atomi... Downloads: 23 | |
